represent 2 witness youth leadership programs congregational leaders internship
CLI is a leadership development program for r2w graduates - college-age young adult leaders from communities of color, working class and middle class, and diverse faith backgrounds. The Congregational Leaders Internship is a two-year commitment. Interns participate in six quarterly work and study retreats (Veterans' Day Weekend, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Weekend, and Cesar Chavez Memorial Weekend each year). Interns also participate in one week-long intensive in which they travel to work, study, and reflect at a region of social and historical importance. These have included the Waianae Coast of Oahu, Hawaii; New York CIty; post-Katrina New Orleans; and the U.S.-Mexico border. One objective of CLI is to locate the social movement. We study the issues of the day -- the election, the financial crisis, the war -- we go into the community, have dialogue with community organizers, and examine the roots of current issues from political, historical, social, economic, and spiritual perspectives. Another objective of CLI is to engage in God's movement in the world -- or "do theology." We pose the question, "What is required of us?" in light of the struggles faced by our families and peoples -- and the major problems confronting society. Another way of saying this is, "How does grace make itself real in society -- and how can we be a part?" Weekend retreats also provide a chance for interns to get away from their usual daily environment and engage in meditation, prayer, music, and sharing, all a part of CLI's spiritual discipline. Expenses for all travel and accommodations are covered by the R2W project. The CLI 2008-2009 Retreats will take place at Donaldina Cameron House, 920 Sacramento Street, San Francisco, CA in San Francisco's Historic Chinatown District. Cameron House is the mission center of the Presbyterian Church in Chinatown, the first Asian American Christian congregation in the United States. How do I apply?

"CLI helped me to be able to express myself more. I have issues with church and family and I don’t know where to go with all these ideas, so I utilize R2W to talk about it and problem pose it, so I can understand it better. I don’t have any other place where I can do that. R2W is a safe place – living in Double Rock [low-income public housing projects in San Francisco], I’m so trapped – R2W is my sanctuary. R2W also opened my eyes. I’m more into watching the news and politics now – I didn’t watch the news before. Talking to fellow Congregational Leadership Interns, I’m more aware and alert. For example, right now, I’m trying to find answers and read up on the evictions that are happening in the housing projects where I live. One thing that I like about CLI is that everybody facilitates – everyone’s a student – there’s nobody that’s better than the other. Everyone’s a teacher, everyone’s a student. You teach what you know." Ose H., CLI 2006-2008 |
